L88 was a factory option package for the Corvette offered from 1967 through 1969. During that time, only 216 Corvettes were sold as an L88. 20 in 1967, 80 in 1968 and 116 in 1969. The 1969 L88 featured on this site is one of only two 1969 L88 convertibles finished in the sinister triple black combination, only two of which were triple black convertibles. There’s a reason very few L88’s were ever actually driven on the street, despite being marketed that way. Heater delete. Radio delete. No power windows. Suspiciously missing fan shroud. The L88 was a racecar disguised as a production car. How else was Corvette Chief Engineer Zora Arkus-Duntov supposed to get around that pesky racing ban?
The cost and published 430 hp (laughable) rating of the L88 engine option certainly also had something to do with the low production. Offered at $1032.15, the L88 was almost $600 more than the 435 horsepower-rated L71 big block. It would be interesting to see how the production numbers would have looked if the L88 was given a published horsepower rating that more closely reflected the L88’s true 500+ horsepower output.
Featured on 1969L88.com is one of the greatest remaining examples of the L88. #20068 not only was purchased new by Corvette racing legend Tony DeLorenzo it was also extensively and successfully raced throughout Europe. Find great history and pictures of this killer car throughout the rest of the website.
The 1969 L88 was truly a special car. It offered good looks, both beautiful and beast like at the same time, along with an engine that could equally get you in and out of trouble.
Enjoy and thanks for stopping in.
